About Membership

Unitarian Universalist congregations are covenantal, rather than creedal, by nature. That means that we do not require anyone to subscribe to a specific set of beliefs to be a member of the Society. Instead we live by a covenant that encourages ethical behavior, affirms democracy, celebrates the worth of each individual and unites us in a search for meaning and in reverence for the great mystery that is life.

Picture of Colin with MembersWe are a welcoming congregation, which affirms all persons who choose to participate in the life or activities of our community, regardless of color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical or mental abilities or economic status.

We warmly invite into membership all in common with our purpose as expressed in our Bond of Union: mutual helpfulness in the search for truth and for enduring value in ways of life; advancement of sound morals among ourselves and in our community; encouragement and protection of individual freedom of religion.

Deciding to join the Society is a commitment and not something that most people take lightly. We hope that becoming a member of our community will enrich your life. Generally, we hope that our members will:

  • Attend services on Sundays;
  • Engage in a spiritual practice such as meditation, prayer or journal writing that helps them to deepen their spiritual, emotional and intellectual lives;
  • Serve the congregation and the wider community;
  • Make what feels like a meaningful contribution to the ongoing life of the congregation through a pledge.

Getting Started at the Society

To help you get acquainted with the Society, as well as the Unitarian Universalist movement, we hold Newcomer Orientations on the second Sunday of even numbered months. Newcomer Orientations are chance for newcomers and others considering membership to learn more about the Society and what it means to be a member of a Unitarian Universalist community. Orientations usually include an invitation to join for those who are ready to do so. However, there is no pressure to join if you are do not wish to.

The process to join the congregation is as follows:

  1. Attend a Newcomer Orientation;
  2. Sign a pledge card;
  3. Sign the membership book.

In addition, we encourage newcomers to meet with Rev. Bossen.

After you have joined the Society you will be formally welcomed into the congregation at a Membership Sunday. Membership Sundays occur four to five times a year.
